To many kidney patients, hearing the word “match” is synonymous to hearing the word “life.” There are thousands of patients waiting to be matched with a kidney donor. However, the numbers may drop after hearing the success rate of “No-Match” kidney donors. Surgeons at Johns Hopkins University have prepared kidney transplant surgeries using non-matching donors. “Plasmaphereis” a blood filtration process, used prior to surgery, is the key factor in allowing most patients to receive transplant from non-matching donors.
